Keya Tama is a South African-born, Brooklyn-based muralist, painter, and illustrator. His practice explores the contrast between ancient iconographies and modern folklore. Utilizing recurring motifs of people, animals, and nature, his murals tell stories of the past and the future. His work takes many forms: whether across the facade of a 10-story building, carefully sewn into a locally produced tapestry, or displayed on canvas in a sold-out gallery, his style and voice remain distinctly his own, shaped by the life he’s lived.
As the son of artists, he began his practice at the young age of 13 and chose to bypass higher education to further his career in Los Angeles at just 19. From there, he has painted murals in far-reaching places like Madagascar and Bolivia, as well as in crowded metropolitan areas such as New York and London. Equally diverse is his client list, which ranges from fun and eccentric brands like Cartoon Network to esteemed institutions such as the Royal Delft Museum.
This session will be perfect for those interested in the world of muraling, fine art, and developing a deeply personal practice. I look forward to hearing more about his truly unique life, career, and artistic philosophy.
